CLARiiON CX4 series architecture

The breakthrough CX4 architecture delivers cutting-edge performance, including the highest levels of resiliency and availability; tiered-storage flexibility; and powerful, easy-to-use interfaces. CX4’s UltraFlex technology provides you with the flexibility of using a combination of FC and iSCSI connections.

Initial tiered storage configurations are simplified due to the CX4’s ability to detect the characteristics of drives as they are added. Furthermore, as your requirements change, CLARiiON’s unique virtual LUN technology can move data from one tier of storage to a higher or lower tier of storage without disrupting the host application.

UltraFlex technology

UltraFlex technology is a breakthrough approach to array connectivity. The CX4’s UltraFlex technology delivers an easily customizable storage system. I/O slots can be populated with the appropriate I/O modules to meet the specific need of each environment.

As of FLARE release 29, CLARiiON CX4 series storage systems support four unique UltraFlex I/O modules: 8 Gb/s FC (Fibre Channel), 4 Gb/s FC, 10 Gb/s iSCSI, and 1 Gb/s iSCSI.

The four-port 8 Gb/s FC module provides the SP with four ports that can operate at 2, 4, or 8 Gb/s. The four-port 4 Gb/s FC module provides the SP with four ports that can operate at 1, 2, or 4 Gb/s. FC ports can function with either front-end or back-end connectivity; when functioning as back-end ports speeds of 4 or 2 Gb/s are supported. In the field, 4 Gb/s FC modules can be upgraded to 8 Gb/s modules if desired.

The two-port 10 Gb/s iSCSI module provides the SP with two ports that operate at 10 Gb/s. The two-port 1 Gb/s iSCSI module provides the SP with two ports that can operate at 10, 100, or 1000 Mb/s. iSCSI ports can only be front-end ports. In the field, 1 Gb/s iSCSI modules can be upgraded to 10 Gb/s modules if desired.
